Obituary for Frederica W. A. Hazard
FREDERICKA WILHELMINA ALDRED HAZARD (BILLIE)
91, of Saunderstown and Providence, RI passed away peacefully June 20, 2016 at the Philip Hulitar Hospice Center in Providence, RI. Born August 18, 1924 in Providence, Billie was the third child of Edith and Frederick Aldred, president of Gladdings Department Store. Her family lived in Providence, and spent many happy summers in their Hampton, CT home. Billie graduated from Wheeler School and Pine Manor College. During World War II she joined the Navy as a nurse’s aide and she remained a great supporter of the Navy.
In 1948 Billie married Frederick Rowland Hazard III of Saunderstown, RI. They lived in Hinsdale, IL for thirty five years with summers in Saunderstown, Hampton and Oconomowoc, WI. While in Hinsdale she was active at her four children’s schools, the Garden Club, Humane Society, Junior League, and Playreaders. She was also an avid tennis player. Upon retiring, the couple moved back to Rhode Island where she enjoyed being a gracious hostess for family and friends. Billie, a passionate gardener, filled the grounds of their home with colorful flowers, trails, frog ponds and plants.
Billie’s many interests included The National Society of The Colonial Dames of America, where she organized many interesting educational meetings, the South County Garden Club, where she was instrumental in restoring the Hazard Garden in Peacedale, the Newport Naval Academy lecture series, and the USO. Billie was a talented student of arts and crafts and enjoyed classes at the Handicraft Club. She loved spending time with friends and family at the beach.
Billie was preceded in death by her adored husband, parents and siblings:Territa Lowenberg, Joan Zinke, Patricia Bodell and Ormston Aldred. She was a devoted mother to her four children: Susan Hazard Garet of Tucson, AZ (Ronald Garet), Frederick (Eric) Rowland Hazard IV of La Jolla, CA (Jennifer Hazard), Caroline Hazard Goedhart of Sammamish, WA (Jim Goedhart) and Elizabeth Sedgewick Hazard, of Charlottesville, VA and Jamestown, RI (Ted Dintersmith). She is survived by her adorables: nine grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Her nieces and nephews will also miss her dearly. She was beloved for her kindness, ever present smile, contagious laugh, energetic spirit and desire to help others. Billie valued lifelong friendships, many of which started in elementary and dancing school.
Billie will be buried at Swan Point Cemetery next to her husband and family. There will be a memorial event for friends and family to celebrate Billie Hazard’s life in August. In lieu of flowers, please send donations in her memory to the USO, PO Box 96860, Washington, DC 20077-7677. Condolences can be sent to PO Box 236, Saunderstown, RI 02874. The family would like to thank those who helped care for Billie and her home over the past few years and all the friends and family who have shared stories of Billie’s kindness, graciousness and enthusiasm for life.
