Obituary for Carl E. Stenberg
Stenberg, Carl Edward, of Singer Island, FL, formerly of Providence, RI passed away on February 9th at the Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center.  He was the devoted and beloved husband of Marjorie (Jones) Stenberg.  Born in 1929 in Boston, MA, he was the son of William and Emma (Pederson) Stenberg and the brother of the late Richard Stenberg.
Carl was a graduate of Philips Andover Academy where he received a full scholarship for both academics and athletics.  Dr. Stenberg then attended Brown University where he earned both a Bachelors and Masters Degree in English.  During his time at Brown, he was called to active duty in the U. S. Navy on two occasions during the Korean War where he served as a radioman in both Alaska and Morocco. He was also a pitcher on the Brown Baseball team. After completing his degrees at Brown, he received a Rotary Fellowship to study abroad and he received another Masters Degree from the Queens University of Belfast in Northern Ireland.  Dr. Stenberg then went on to earn his PhD. in English from the University of Connecticut.
He went on to teach for 35 years at Rhode Island College where he was a full Professor.  In addition to being a popular and dedicated Professor at RIC, Dr. Stenberg also worked part time speechwriter in the administrations of former Providence Mayor Cianci and former Rhode Island Governor Edward DiPrete.   
Dr. Stenberg was an enthusiastic hockey coach for many years with the Brown Cubs hockey program where he coached both of his sons and countless others. Always a devoted alumnus of Brown University, he served on the boards of the Friends of Brown Basketball and the Brown Hockey Association.  He also served as the First Warden of his beloved St. Martins Church in Providence.
Mr. Stenberg is survived by his wife, Marjorie of Florida, and his sons Christopher Stenberg and Kurt Stenberg, and his wife Michele, of Providence.  He is also survived by his 8 grandchildren Andre, Julienne, Phoebe, Nicolas, Leif, Emma, Abigail and Corey, and a great grandchild, Alex.
A funeral service will be held Thursday at 11 am in St. Martin Church, 50 Orchard St., Providence. Burial will be in Swan Point Cemetery. Calling hours Wednesday from 5 to 7pm in the Monahan, Drabble & Sherman Funeral Home, 230 Waterman St., Providence. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to St. Martins Church, 50 Orchard St., Providence, RI 02906
