Obituary for Katherine Palmer Imbrie
Katherine Palmer “Kate” Imbrie, 65, of Barrington died March 13, 2018 while bicycling in Florida.

Katherine was born on September 30, 1952 in New London, Connecticut, the daughter of John Imbrie, a professor of geology, and Barbara (Zeller) Imbrie. She grew up in Leonia, New Jersey, and moved with her family to Seekonk, Massachusetts in 1967. She graduated from Wheaton College in 1974. She began a career in writing at the Boston Museum of Science. She was co-author, with her father, of ''Ice Ages: Solving the Mystery,'' about the historical developments leading to our current understanding of ice-age climates. In 1979, the book won the Phi Beta Kappa award for science writing.

Kate settled in Barrington, RI. A talented writer, she wrote for the Features Department of the Providence Journal for 24 years until her retirement in 2008. She was married to Frederick Stinson, a schoolteacher, from 1982 until his death in 1995.

Kate had a zest and exuberance for adventure on the water, in the mountains of New England, and for the back roads. She had a special love of the beaches and waterways of Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts, and wrote lovingly of her experiences for the Journal. She loved to ski in New Hampshire and Vermont and kayak both locally and in northern New England. She became a dedicated and expert cyclist and an active member of the Narragansett Bay Wheelmen.

She had a strong passion for dogs, with her last two being her beloved Wheaten Terriers Maisy and Lily May.

Kate was a special and caring person who brought joy and enthusiasm into the lives of the people she met along the way of life’s journey. She loved meeting people and had a great curiosity and interest in their lives.

Kate is survived by her mother, who lives in Seekonk, Massachusetts, her brother John Z. Imbrie, of Keswick, Virginia, and her aunt, Palmer Faran, of Lincoln, Massachusetts.

A memorial service will be held at noon on Saturday, March 24 at the Squantum Association in Riverside. Donations in Kate's memory may be made to the SCWTCA Endowment, wheatenhealthendowment.org.
