Ms. Ames volunteered and was a recognized leader in community organizations serving both adults and children. She was a Board member and officer at the Mount Hope Day Care Center, the Providence In-Town Churches Association (PICA), the George Hunt Help Center, Shelter Services, Inc., and The Blessing Way. She was president of PICA for several years and was given an award for outstanding leadership during a time of the agency’s growth.
She was an active member of Grace Episcopal Church, serving on the Vestry and as Parish Clerk, Director for the Alter Guild, Chair of the Outreach Committee and Convener of the Women’s Evening Fellowship. She was also an usher, Eucharistic minister and lector. She participated in several diocesan committees.
Ms. Ames was an amateur genealogist with a love for community and her friends. She enjoyed researching family trees, reading, and comparing notes with other relatives and sometimes traveled to meet newly found family members.
She leaves her son, John Winthrop Ames, and his wife Melissa Urban Ames and her granddaughter Julia Sofia Urban Ames, all of Pawtucket. She is also survived by her sisters, Mary Huggard McDonough of Missouri and Frances Huggard Migliaccio of Seattle, Washington. She leaves many close friends, nephews and numerous cousins, some known a lifetime and others more recently found.
A memorial service will take place at Grace Church in Providence at a later time this year.
