Obituary for Margaret "Dazzle" Gidley
Margaret “Dazzle” Devoe Gidley, 83, died Wednesday, December 14th in Providence, RI.
Born in Providence, RI, she was the daughter of Harry L Devoe and Margaret Waterman Devoe. Dazzle was descended from five Mayflower passengers and most of the original settlers of both Providence and Newport, including Roger Wiliams and Richard Waterman.
Dazzle was a graduate of Brown University and received a Masters degree in music from Yale University. Margaret was actively involved in the music community in Rhode Island. She taught piano both privately and at Rhode Island College and the Community College of Rhode Island. She served on the boards of the Chopin Club, the Chaminade Club, and the Rhode Island Civic Choral & Orchestra. She was a former chairwoman of the Governor's Arts Awards Committee and also served on the Rhode Island Council on the Arts. She was the pianist of the Providence Civic Orchestra for Senior Citizens until her death.
In addition to music, Dazzle was active in Republican politics for a time, an active tennis player until late in her life and a lifelong member of the Central Congregational Church in Providence.
Dazzle is survived by her twin brother Harry L. Devoe, Jr. of New Zion, SC, her sons Thomas “Ted” Edwin Gidley ,and his wife Janet Landers, of Newport, and David Waterman Gidley, and his wife Jeanine Boyle, and their son Luke Thomas Gidley of Washington, DC.
A celebration of her life will be held at Central Congressional Church, 296 Angell St, Providence, RI, on Friday, January 6th at 11:00. A private burial at Swan Point Cemetery in Providence will precede the service.
