Obituary for Timothy Joseph McGann
Timothy Joseph McGann, 51, of Providence passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, March 10, 2020 after being struck by a vehicle. He was born in Woonsocket, RI, on December 30, 1968, the son of the late Joseph D. McGann, Jr. and survived by his mother, Stephanie “Taffy” (Morrison) McGann of Bristol, RI, his sister Stephanie (McGann) Sheehan, his Brother-in-Law James (Jay) Sheehan, and nephew James Sheehan and niece Macey Sheehan, all of Simsbury, CT. Tim is also survived by his stepchildren Alex Fischer, Georgianna (Gigi) Fischer, and Wallace (Wally) Fischer, all of Bristol, RI.
Tim was a graduate of Mount Saint Charles Academy in Woonsocket (1986), Providence College (1990) where he studied History and graduated Magna Cum Laude, and Suffolk University Law School in Boston where he received his Juris Doctorate in 1993.
Upon graduating from Suffolk, Tim clerked for the Rhode Island Superior Court in Providence from 1993-1994 before practicing law for two years in Rhode Island. He then moved to Atlanta in 1997, practicing for one of the south’s most prestigious law firms, Alston & Bird, before working in-house at Wachovia Bank. He returned to New England in 2003, working as a trust officer for Cape Cod 5 Bank in the Orleans branch. His last professional position was as Managing Director, Senior Trust Officer at U.S. Trust/Bank of America Private Bank, initially for several years in the Boston office and most recently in Providence.
Tim had a personality that was “larger than life.” He was a lover of history (particularly British naval history), literature, comedy, music, mixology and sports, and these varied interests came in handy when Tim was featured as a contestant on the classic game show Jeopardy! Tim lit up every room he entered with an ear-to-ear smile and an unrivaled story-telling ability exemplified by boundless energy, charisma and spirit. He cherished the time he spent with family and friends (all of whom were family to him), while he sang and played his guitar, sailed, rode horses, trekked, skied, and travelled the world, making the most of every experience.
Tim was passionate about the Red Sox, Patriots, Bruins and his beloved Friars, the Beatles, Bruce Springsteen and Jason Isbell. He leaves behind an adoring mass of family, friends, colleagues, his girlfriend, Lissa Poirot, of Coopersburg, PA, and his beloved corgi, Abbey.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Huntington’s Disease Society of America (HDSA.org). A Memorial Service will be held at a date to be announced.
