Obituary for William J. Leddy
98, of Rumford, RI and Vero Beach, FL, died peacefully on March 3, 2021. He was the husband of the late Mary (Kozar) Leddy, who he absolutely adored. Son of the late James A. and Fanny G. (Nolan) Leddy, he was born in North Providence, lived in Rumford, RI for the last 60 years, and spent winters in Vero Beach, FL for the last 30 years. Bill graduated from Barrington High School in 1941, served with the Air Force, 15th Division, in Italy during World War II, and graduated from Providence College in 1949. Bill was an enthusiastic salesman for Pitney Bowes for 33 years, retiring in 1985 at age 62, after a successful career where he received many sales awards. He and Mary were members of St. Margaret parish in Rumford, and Holy Cross parish in Vero Beach, FL. At St Margaret, he was a Eucharistic Minister, served on the parish council, and was a member of the choir. He was formerly an active member of the Cursillo movement and was a life member of the Knights of Columbus.
Bill enjoyed playing golf, bridge, and shuffleboard, and also dabbled in painting during his retirement. He created and organized a shuffleboard league in Vero Beach, which grew to almost 100 members over the years, and which was later named after him. He was very positive, engaging, enthusiastic, and truly lived every moment of life to the fullest. Bill especially enjoyed spending time with his family and many, many friends. He loved going out with his children and grandchildren for oysters and a martini.
Bill is survived by a son, William J Leddy, Jr. of Haute Nendaz, Switzerland and his wife, Marie Christine. He is also survived by two daughters, Tricia Leddy and her husband Paul Langhammer, of East Greenwich, RI and Kathleen Leddy and her husband Randy Titsworth of Seekonk, MA. He was very close to his grandchildren, Katrina Langhammer Pilcher; Nolan and Mark Langhammer; Kyle, Clement and Robert Titsworth; Lucas and Theo Vonlanthen; and his greatgrandchild and namesake, William Pilcher. He was the brother of the late Catherine Barney, James A. Leddy, Jr., and Mary Frances Byerly, and he is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held at St. Margaret Church on Friday, March 12 at 11:00 AM. Masks and social distancing will be required, and seating will be limited. Burial at Mt. St. Mary Cemetery, where he will join his beloved wife, Mary, will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory would be appreciated to Meals on Wheels of RI, www.rimeals.org.
