Obituary for Virginia Arnold Siener
Virginia Arnold Siener, 87, wife of P. Robert Siener Jr., of Greene and Providence, and noted horticulturalist, died on Thursday after a long illness.
Born on April 1, 1926 into one of Rhode Island’s earliest families, she was the daughter of the late Edwin H. and Agnes (Anderson) Arnold, of Greene.
She graduated from Lincoln School in 1943 and received a B.S. in biology from Randolph Macon Women’s College, in Lynchburg, Va., in 1947. Her early education was received in a one-room schoolhouse in Greene. She was married to Robert Siener, a manufacturer, on Sept. 8, 1951.
The family made its home in Providence until the early 1970s, when the Sieners moved full time to their farm in Greene, where Ginny, as she was known, managed the family cranberry business and other agricultural operations.
Mrs. Siener was also a proponent of land conservation and stewardship and the activities of the Rhode Island Forest Conservators Organization. She was a recipient of the Rhode Island Tree Farmer of the Year award. She also served on the board of the Nature Conservancy of Rhode Island.
In addition, Mrs. Siener served on the boards of the Greene Company, the Cooley Group and the Hopkins Hollow Cemetery Corporation. She was a member of the National Society of Colonial Dames and the Garden Club of America. She was a past member of the Agawam Hunt Club, the Dunes Club and the Handicraft Club.
Virginia Siener is survived by her husband and children; Elizabeth S. Bodell, of Providence; Stephen A. Siener, of Greene; Hannah H. Siener, of Stonington, Conn.; eight grandchildren, and her beloved dog, Maggie.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, March 26, at 11 a.m. St Martin’s Church, Orchard Avenue, Providence. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Providence Animal Rescue League and the Alzheimer’s Association.
