Obituary for Katherine Cauchon Thurber
Thurber, Katherine Cauchon, 86, of Providence passed away peacefully on January 4, 2016 at Rhode Island Hospital surrounded by her family. Born December 22, 1929 in Providence, she was the youngest child of Elizabeth Gormley Cauchon and Henry Cauchon. Mrs. Thurber lived in Providence and attended Classical High School. She graduated from Pembroke College with BA in History in 1951. She was active in Alumni Affairs of Brown University and was continuously re-elected to her class board and proudly marched down College Hill every spring with each new graduating class.
Â
In 1952 she married Tracy G. Thurber, and the couple eventually settled in their house on the East Side of Providence where they raised their three children along with many cats and dogs.
Mrs. Thurber had a very active life in the community. She was a President of the Junior League, and a member of the Pottery & Porcelain Club, the Art Club, the Handy Craft Club, and the Hope Club. While treasurer of an alumni committee at Brown, she realized that she needed an accounting background so she went to Bryant College and earned MBA & CPA degrees 1981. She then took a job as an accountant at Blue Cross/Blue Shield of RI. When she retired, she continued to work on the Board of the Laurelmead Cooperative.
Â
Mrs Thurber was a kind-hearted soul and during the holidays regularly invited students who could not afford to travel to the Thurber family gatherings. She also enjoyed hiking in the White Mountains with her children and traveling. She was also a regular supporter of the Rhode Island Philharmonic.
Â
Mrs. Thurber is survived by her daughter Tracy Elizabeth Thurber, two sons, Frederick Thurber (married to Amy Turano Thurber), and Peter H. F. Thurber (married to Terri McNitt Thurber), and two grandsons, Benjamin G. Thurber and Brian McNitt. Mrs Thurber's only sibling, Henry Cauchon and his wife Mary, passed away previously but were survived by their two children, Mary Ann Cauchon and Thomas Cauchon and three grandchildren.
Â
A reception for Mrs. Thurber is planned for Wednesday, January 13, 2015, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Laurelmead Cooperative (355 Blackstone Boulevard, Providence).  A private religious family service will be held this spring.
