Obituary for Joseph "Puga" Rekrut
Joseph “Puga” Rekrut, of Warwick RI, passed away peacefully Wednesday February 10, 2021 at the age of 97.
He was predeceased by his wife Patricia, who passed away in 2001. They were beloved parents of Peter Rekrut, who passed away in 1975; Joseph Rekrut and his wife Patricia of Bluffton, SC; James Rekrut of Cranston RI; Michael Rekrut and his wife Maureen of St. Albans, ME; and Patricia Rekrut of Warwick, RI.
His 11 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren will miss their Puga very much.
Joseph was born in Fall River, MA on September 10, 1923 to parents Katherine and Walter. He moved to Providence early in his childhood where he soon met his future wife Patricia. He joined the Navy in 1941 and married Patricia while on leave in 1942. After proudly serving in the U.S. Navy until the end of WWII, he returned to Rhode Island to raise his family with Patricia.
He worked as an airplane mechanic for the U.S. Navy at Quonset Pt. until his retirement in 1973.
In 1984 he and Patricia moved to Spring Hill, Florida to enjoy their retirement. He returned to Rhode Island in 2016 to be closer to his family and lived in Warwick until his passing.
Puga’s beagle Daisy moved in with him in 2004 and quickly became the new love of his life. Daisy stayed with him until shortly after they returned to Rhode Island in 2016.
Much of Puga’s life revolved around golf, especially after he retired. His long golf life included a hole in one, which he was very proud of, and continued to play until he was 93. When he wasn’t golfing, he enjoyed beating his family members in cribbage.
Puga had an artistic side. He was an avid and very good painter. He liked to point out that he sold more paintings than Vincent van Gogh while he was alive. And he was also an author! After getting his first computer at age 73 he typed his autobiography “Cuckoo Uke” with two fingers. In his 90’s he learned how to Skype and how to read books on his Kindle.
Puga loved his role in the US Navy and was very proud of being a veteran. He reveled in his membership in the Greatest Generation.
Nothing made Puga happier than a day trip or a restaurant visit with family. While he lived in Florida and after returning to Rhode Island, he loved going out with friends or family to his favorite restaurants.
Puga was a devout Catholic who was very active in charity in his church, as a member of the Knights of Columbus and as an 87-year-old altar boy who also helped run and cook for church events. This past year, the most important thing on Puga’s schedule was mass on TV every Sunday morning.
Internment will be private. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the National Library Service (NLS), whose Talking Books program for the blind was a great comfort to my father.
