Born in Warwick, a daughter of the late George A. and A. Elizabeth (Upham) Winter.
Both Betty and her late husband met at Lockwood High School where they both graduated in the class of ’43.
Betty went on to be a Golden Grad class of 1950 at University of Rhode Island. Her children were graduates of the University as this has continued through her grandchildren.
During her years in URI Betty was a very enthusiastic member of Delta Zeta Sorority with a continued following through the following 70 years.
She was a member of the League of Women Voters, the URI Alumni Association, and the Kingston Garden Club.
For most of her life Betty was a devout mother, homemaker, encouraging all of her children to become involved in sports for all New England seasons, particularly baseball, soccer, fishing and skiing. She loved spending vacations on Lake Salem in Vermont and the family’s second home in Goshen, NH. Many ski trips and summer vacations were enjoyed across both Vermont and New Hampshire.
Much of the summer season was spent in Button Woods, and the South County beaches.
Grandchildren and great grandchildren provided much enjoyment and renewed energy. She provided guidance and devotion to her entire family leaving a lasting mark on all who made her acquaintance, both family and friends.
In addition to the University of Rhode Island Alumni, Betty supported other causes, to name a few were PEO and the Episcopal Church. Most, if not all were social service representations to the community.
This social service was delivered directly by Betty as she gave years to the Bereavement Program of Hope Hospice Care of RI and as a Chaplin’s assistant and as a South County Hospital volunteer.
She leaves a son, Milton T. Huston, Jr. and his wife Martha of Narragansett, a daughter, Caroline Jenckes and her husband Robert of Kingston, her grandchildren, Holly Elizabeth O’Brien, Wyatt Huston, Noah and Meredith Elizabeth Jenckes, her great-grandchildren, Sloane Elizabeth and Parker O’Brien, a sister, Meredith Kantor along with many nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be held Friday at 11 am in St. Luke’s Church, Pierce St. East Greenwich to which relatives and friends are invited. Calling hours are respectfully omitted and burial will be private.
In lieu of flowers please donate in Betty’s memory to her favored causes, URI, Hope Hospice Care of RI and St Luke’s church.
