Obituary for Bruce Donovan
Bruce Donovan, 74, of Providence passed away Monday July 11, 2011. Bruce attended Brown University before earning a PhD at Yale University. Returning to Brown, he became a campus icon during a career as a Professor of Classics and a Dean. His dedication to education and learning combined with a wide-ranging intellect, deep sense of caring and compassion, and wit to make him a pivotal figure in the lives of many students and colleagues.
Proud of his 38 years of sobriety, Bruce was also a pioneer and strong voice in substance abuse prevention & recovery on campus, in the community, and throughout the country. Dedicated to community service, he served in key volunteer roles with Home & Hospice Care of Rhode Island, the Funeral Consumers Alliance, the Rhode Island Historical Society, and the Samaritans.
He was the beloved husband of Doris Donovan.  Devoted to his friends and family, in addition to his wife he leaves his son Greg and his wife Liane and their children Sara and Reid, and his daughter Erika and her husband Jaime Estades and their children Gabriela and Jazmín.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the fund for the Bruce Elliot Donovan Dean for Issues of Chemical Dependency, Brown University, Box 1908, Providence, RI 02912. A private comittal service will be held with a public celebration of his life to be held in September.
