Obituary for Adelaide M. Nicholson

Adelaide McAlpin Nicholson, beloved wife of Paul C. Nicholson, Jr. died at the age of 92 on April 13, 2015 at her home in Providence, R.I. surrounded by her family.  Her death occurred just two days after the happy celebration of their 73rd Wedding Anniversary.
She was born in Morristown, New Jersey on July 31, 1922, the daughter of Allan Heyward McAlpin and Elizabeth Cauldwell McAlpin.  She attended The Peck School, Morristown, and graduated from Miss Porter’s School, Farmington, Connecticut, in 1940.  Her girlhood summers were spent at the Blooming Grove Hunting and Fishing Club in Hawley, Pennsylvania, where she developed a lasting appreciation of the beauties of nature and acquired highly proficient skills at tennis and trout fishing.  Both of these sources of recreation would remain with her until an advanced age.  Following her graduation from school, she studied for one year at the Columbia University School of Journalism before marrying Paul Nicholson in April of 1942.  During the turbulent war years she served as a volunteer in the American Red Cross Motor Corps in New Jersey and in several states where her husband was stationed in the United States Navy.  With the resumption of peace, they established residence in Providence, Rhode Island, where they have lived in the wintertime for the last 70 years and in Bristol, Rhode Island, in the summers.  After her marriage she became an accomplished and enthusiastic sailor, cruising with her husband, family and friends on their various boats up and down the East Coast of the United States and in twenty foreign countries.
Throughout her long life Adelaide maintained a strong interest in a number of educational and charitable organizations.  She was a member and a past president of the Junior League of Rhode Island; a long-time trustee of the Meeting Street Center (formerly Meeting Street School); a former trustee of Home & Hospice Care of Rhode Island; a former trustee of the Wheeler School, Providence; and was a member of the Permanent Diaconate of Central Congregational Church, Providence.  She was a member of Agawam Hunt, The Handicraft Club of Providence, and The Woman Flyfishers Club Inc.
In addition to her husband, Adelaide is survived by her four loving children and their spouses: Paul C. Nicholson III of Osprey, FL and his wife, Donna M. Nicholson; Thomas H. Nicholson of Weston, MA, and his wife, Catharine F. Nicholson; Martha N. Lohaus of Clarksville, MD and her husband, Allan W. Lohaus; and Adelaide Nicholson of Conifer, CO.  She is also survived by ten grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren.  She was the sister of the late Elizabeth McA. Froment and the late Allan H. McAlpin, Jr., both of Morristown, N.J.
A memorial service will be held at Central Congregational Church, Angell St, Providence, on Monday, May 4th at 11am. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent in her memory to the Meeting Street Center, 1000 Eddy Street, Providence, R.I. 02905 or to Central Congregational Church, 296 Angell Street, Providence, R.I. 02906.
