Obituary for David Cargill
The Rev. David C. Cargill died with dignity and integrity on July 9, 2011.  He was born May 10, 1930 in Newport, Vermont.  A graduate of Boston University and the Episcopal seminary, Bexley Hall, he was ordained both deacon and priest at St. Paul’s Church in Concord, NH.  While vicar of St. Andrew’s in New London, NH, he also served as chaplain for Colby Junior College.  In 1961, he was appointed Secretary of the Episcopal Province of New England, and worked with college ministries throughout the US.  He also served as director of Winni, a religious summer camp for young adults.  As rector of St. Mark’s Church in Syracuse, NY, he was a leader of the ecumenical movement of the Episcopal and Roman Catholic denominations and established close ties with rabbinical colleagues.  He was also a Freedom Rider and active in the civil rights movement.  For four years, David left parochial priesthood and provided career counseling through the organizations, Bearings of NE and Kerygma, in Boston; in the 1970’s he returned to church work as assistant rector of Church of the Good Shepherd in Nashua, NH, and later as co-rector of St. Martin’s, Pawtucket, RI.   He became a Pastoral Counselor and established chaplaincy programs at Miriam Hospital and Home & Hospice Care of Rhode Island, as well as a private practice, and provided interim services to many parishes in the Diocese of RI.   During his lifetime, David was a devotee of classical music, voice and stage, singing in civic choral organizations such as the Providence Singers, and performing in operetta and musical theater roles as a young man.   As a member of the gay community, much of David’s ministry supported LGBT issues within the Church and society at large.  He is survived by his sister, Judith Cargill Phillips of Littleton, NH; former wife, Frances Barr Cargill of Franklin, NC; daughter, Laurel Cargill Radley of Washington, DC; and a wealth of friends and family who still love him deeply.  A memorial service will be held at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in East Greenwich, RI on Saturday, September 17, 2011 at 10:00 AM.  In lieu of flowers, gifts may be given to Hallworth House 66 Benefit St. Providence RI 02904, Episcopal Charities http://www.er-d.org or Home & Hospice Care of Rhode Island http://www.hhcri.org
