Obituary for Mary Babcock Pitts
Pitts, Mary “Polly” Babcock, 85, of Little Compton, RI, died February 4, 2013, with her four children at her side.  She was the widow of Dr. John D. Pitts and the sister of the late Barbara Johnson.
Born on August 27, 1927 in Providence, RI, the daughter of the late Donald Sturges Babcock and Mary Gladding Babcock, Mrs. Pitts attended the Wheeler School followed by Miss Porter’s School, and went on to graduate from Pine Manor.  As a Mayflower descendent, she was an active member of the Rhode Island Chapter of the National Society of Colonial Dames. She raised her family in Providence and Little Compton.
Avid tennis player and golfer, devotee of music and dancing, accomplished gardener and ardent animal lover, Polly surrounded herself with life.  The Pitts household was home to abundant flora and fauna, including herds of cats and dogs, a few horses, as well as hamsters, turtles, parakeets, chameleons and other creatures.  Polly literally would not harm a fly. Errant insects were escorted to the door, to the amusement of her family.  She was an indulgent mother and grandmother, whose love often took the form of her now-legendary and always delectable Ice Box Cake.
Mrs. Pitts is survived by three daughters, Mary Small, of Rumford, RI, Nancy Griffin of North Pomfret, VT, and Ellie Pitts of Newton, MA; and a son, John Pitts, Jr., of New York City. She was a beloved “Gaga” to nine grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 23, at 11:30 am at the United Congregational Church in Little Compton.  In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Potter League for Animals, PO Box 412, Newport, RI  02840.
