Obituary for Estelle MacDonald
Estelle MacDonald, 94, of Rumford, died on February 15, 2013 with family members at her side. She was the cherished wife of the late Dr. William MacDonald. Born in East Providence, she was the daughter of the late John and Josephine (Spaight) Gregory.
She led a full life, beloved by her husband and family, and active in her community. She possessed a warm, vivacious, and curious nature; she truly enjoyed being with people , and was always a great support. Most of all, she loved being with her husband, children, and grandchildren. She took great joy and pride in her family, and was steadfast and wise in times of challenge or sorrow. She was a longtime member of Wannamoisett Country Club, a parishioner of St. Margaret’s Church, and an active member of the Providence Lying-In Women’s Auxiliary. Her many interests included travel, cooking, gardening, golf, bridge, and investments. She was hospitable and gracious, and her generosity of spirit, delicious meals, and sparkling personality were engaging to all.
She will be sorely missed by her family. She was the mother of five, including the late William MacDonald, Jr. She leaves three daughters: Jane MacDonald (James Schmidt), of Newton, Ma.; Elizabeth Kiernan (James Kiernan), of Greenwich, Ct.; and Lisa MacDonald, of Rumford, RI; her son, Gregory MacDonald (Wendy Soliday), of East Montpelier, VT, and her daughter-in-law, Karen MacDonald Thompson (James) of Mukilteo, Wa.; and her sister, Carmel Calner, of East Providence; 16 grandchildren, and 9 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased her siblings, Mary Harrington, Ursula Shadrick, Loretta Scullion, and John J. Gregory, Jr.
Her funeral will be held Thursday, February 21st, at 10:00 a.m., with a Mass of Christian Burial at St Margaret’s Church, 1098 Pawtucket Ave., Rumford. Burial will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Calling hours are Wednesday, February 20, from 4-7 p.m, at the Monahan Drabble Sherman Funeral Home, 230 Waterman St., Providence .
