Obituary for Robert Hoot Hartman
Robert “Hoot” Hartman, Warwick, passed peacefully on September 8, 2013 surrounded by his family.
Born in Jeannette, Pennsylvania, he leaves his wife Janet, daughter Susan and husband Gene Whalen of RI, his son Christopher and wife Karen Politi Hartman of Hudson, NH, his son Hans Christian of San Diego CA, his brother Ira Hartman of Jeannette PA, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was the son of Ira and Rose Hartman, brother of Donald and James Hartman, all of Jeannette, PA.
Hoot retired from the US Navy with 20 years of service, 12 of them as a Seabee stationed in Guam; Adak, AK; Okinawa, Japan; Port Hueneme and San Diego, CA; Davisville, RI, and McMurdo Sound, Antarctica. He cross rated to become a Parachute Rigger where he served aboard the USS Forrestal in the Mediterranean; Miramar Naval Air Station in San Diego, CA; Naval Air Station in Sanford, FL; and VX-6 McMurdo Sound in Antarctica. He retired at Quonset Point Naval Air Station RI in 1971.
He received his BS in Business Management from Johnson & Wales University in 1978.
Following his retirement from the Navy, he joined US Airways as a crew scheduler at both Boston and Washington, DC airports until 1988 when he retired yet again. He was known for his gregarious out-going personality, sense of humor, and strong work ethic.
During his retirement years, he enjoyed working various part time jobs, but perhaps his favorite was working for the US Census Bureau in 2010.
Over the years, Hoot enjoyed deer hunting in PA and ME, played competitive softball while a member of Harmony Lodge, was a member of the Gaspee Days Committee, founder of the Pawtuxet Rangers Fife & Drum Corp, volunteered for the Pawtuxet Village Association, and served on the board of the Old Antarctic Explorers Association, a national organization. He was an avid gardener, volunteer, and friend to a great many.
According to his wishes, he has donated his body to science through the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. No calling hours will be planned, however a Celebration of Life will be scheduled at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent in his name to the Dept. of Veterans Affairs and mailed to: VA Medical Center (135), 830 Chalkstone Ave., Providence, RI 02908.
