Obituary for Augustus Hemenway
Augustus L. Hemenway died peacefully on April 6, 2014, surrounded by family and friends.
He is survived by his wife, Edith (Fitz); his eight children Nora, Wendy, Gus, Mike, Peter, Sarah, Ned and Sam; 14 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. He also leaves a brother, John T. Hemenway, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Son of Lawrence and Natalie (Thayer) Hemenway, he was born in Boston, Mass, in 1922. He graduated from Milton Academy and attended Harvard University for a year before joining the American Field Service, driving ambulances in Italy and Egypt. Later he served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theater.
After the war, he married and with his wife graduated from McGill University. He then moved to California where he went to seminary and had his first parish in San Francisco at the Church of the Good Samaritan, remaining there for ten years.
He served briefly in England at the end of the fifties, then moved to Providence, R.I. There he worked at Christ Church in South Providence for over twenty years, attempting to bridge the gap between the institutions set up to help the needy and those needing the help. As he said, “People are usually already at the end of their ropes when they walk into a church or some other institution.”
He never hesitated to stand up for the oppressed or downtrodden, and those who loved him will never forget his openness, his sense of humor, and his ability to make all who knew him smile and appreciate life.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, April 14th, at 11 am in St. Paul’s Church, Park Place, Pawtucket. Donations in his memory may be made to Amos House, 415 Friendship St, Providence (
