Obituary for Vsevolod Sadovnikoff
Dr. Vsevolod Sadovvnikoff died peacefully at home in Warwick, on October 30 at age 96. Known as Loda, he is survived by his wife of 62 years, the pianist Mary Briggs Sadovnikoff, three children, Nicholas Sadovnikoff and his wife Marcie Rubin of Waltham, MA; Gregory Sadovnikoff and his wife Audrey Tyrka of Barrington, RI; and Laura Sadovnikoff and her husband Andy Blackadar of Warwick, RI; and eight grandchildren: Derek, Ricka, and Sophie Sadovnikoff; Alexander and Alden Sadovnikoff; and Adrian, Natasha, and Niall Blackadar.Â
Loda was born in Moscow, Russia on Feb 24, 1918. In 1920 his family escaped to Poland, leaving behind his father. They made their way to Paris where he received his primary and university education, briefly interrupted by conscription into the French Army during World War II. He received a medical degree from the University of Goettingen in Germany in 1947, and worked as a physician for the U.S. Army in Darmstadt. He came to the United States as a displaced person in 1950. He received training in psychiatry at the Boston State Hospital, and in 1956 moved to Providence. After completing an internship at Roger Williams Hospital, he continued his training at the Boston Psychoanalytic Institute while working for the State of Rhode Island and opening a private practice. Loda became Clinical Director of Juvenile Corrections, and later worked for the Institute of Mental Health in Cranston. He retired from practice in 2000, at the age of 82.
Loda loved listening to jazz, and would often serenade guests singing jazz standards at the piano. He spent many hours tinkering with old VW Beetles, and with a 1938 Buick that he acquired in 1966 and kept until 2006. He also loved trains, and worked endlessly improving the model train system he constructed in his basement.
He greatly enjoyed family life, was deeply fond of his grandchildren, and found great pleasure in the cats and dogs that were part of his family. He loved to travel, by train in particular, and visited some of the haunts of his youth by rail in later years. He was equally fond of spending time with his extended family at their summer home on Halfway Pond in Massachusetts, where he spent many hours fishing, cooking, and creating home movies featuring family and local wildlife. Â Fluent in four languages, he was known for his sense of humor, his kindness, and his humility.
