Obituary for Sophie Tazewell Hawkes
Sophie Tazewell Hawkes of Providence passed away suddenly on Saturday, December 20, at her home in the Laurelmead retirement community.
Sophie was born in Norfolk VA on October 28, 1924. She graduated with an undergraduate degree in Psychology from Radcliffe College and a Master of Arts in French Studies from Brown University.Â
Sophie was an avid gardener and loved opera and animals. For many years she was the first reader and most demanding editor for her husband, novelist and Brown professor John Hawkes.
She is survived by her brother John Tazewell and his wife Betsy of Norfolk, VA; her children Jack Hawkes of Worcester, MA and his partner Caroline Hale; Sophie Hawkes and her husband Stephen Sartarelli of southwestern France; Calvert Hawkes and his wife Joanne Reis Hawkes of Sarasota FL; Richard Hawkes and his wife Claudia Trapassi Hawkes of Providence; and grand-daughter Angela Hawkes of Providence.
Burial will be private. Donations in her honor may be made to the Providence Animal Rescue League, 34 Elbow St., Providence RI 02903.
