Obituary for Mary P. Newman
Mary P. Newman, 87, passed away peacefully on March 8 in Middletown, RI.  Wife of the late Thomas R. Newman, mother of Marijo of New York City, Tom of Middletown, RI and Patrice of Wakefield, RI, loving grandmother of Thomas Newman, Sean Newman and Callan Napier, sister-in-law of Ann Scanlon, Joan Scanlon, Monie Scanlon, and Peg Scanlon, aunt to many nieces and nephews, mother-in-law to Kelley Newman, Henry Shapiro, and David Napier.  Mary’s warm and loving nature, vitality, generosity and family spirit made her beloved by all.
A talented, energetic and compassionate educator, Mary taught for 40 years in Providence Public Schools, working with students in all areas of the city from first graders in south Providence to many years as head of the department of physical education at Mt. Pleasant High School.  At Mt. Pleasant, she also coached girl’s basketball, volleyball, track and tennis teams.
Throughout her life and career, Mary believed passionately in equal educational opportunity and the importance of self-development.  She connected supportively with students, trying to encourage every student who came through her classes and teams to focus on and maximize their rich potential despite and in the face of any difficult circumstances.  With her caring and vigorous focus on their talents and development, Mary inspired many students to heighten their aspirations and lifelong achievements.
As a gifted athlete, Mary excelled at basketball, swimming and golf.  A member of the Rhode Island Women’s Golf Association and Wanumetonomy Golf Club in Middletown since 1976, Mary was the first woman elected to the Wanumetonomy Board of Governors.  She held Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Rhode Island College and was also a graduate of St. Xavier’s Academy in Providence.  Throughout her adult life, Mary continued to gather regularly with her good friends from both high school and college years.
Mary loved socializing and sharing time with family and friends.  She enjoyed concerts and theater and was an avid supporter of the arts and live performance.  With family members and friends, she spent many happy hours enjoying holiday gatherings, festive dinners, lunches, bridge games, outings to performances, trips to New York City, and travels to play golf near and far.  Mary was proud of her three beloved grand-children, Thomas, Sean and Callan, and she delighted in and missed especially her eight siblings who pre-deceased her, Joe, Helen, Ed, Anna, Jack, Leo, Tom, and Bob.
Mary’s humor, compassion, spirited and caring nature will be missed by family members, friends and all who enjoyed knowing and spending time with her.
