Obituary for Ellen (Parker) Riester
Ellen (Parker) Riester passed away on February 1, 2016 at Saint Elizabeth Manor in Bristol. Born February 17, 1923, Ellen was one of twelve children born to the late Richard and Catherine (Tolan) Parker of New York, New York. Ellen was married to the late Edwin H. Riester for more than fifty years.

Ellen and Ed lived in Roslyn, New York for three decades. As a young mother, Ellen was a longtime Girl Scout leader and was an active and involved parent in the Roslyn public schools. When her children were grown, she was a nurse’s aide at Sun Harbor Manor in Roslyn. Ellen and Ed retired to Mansfield, Massachusetts and later moved to Providence. Ellen was a resident at Saint Elizabeth Court in Providence before relocating to Saint Elizabeth Manor in Bristol.

Ellen’s sense of humor and quick wit endeared her to her friends and neighbors. Into her nineties, Ellen would tell inquirers that she was “fat and forty.” A salty old lady who never let kids win at Scrabble, Ellen nonetheless had a soft spot for babies and children, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She had insightful and complimentary things to say about everyone. Ellen was very close with her siblings and her many nieces and nephews.

Ellen is survived by daughter Claire and son-in-law Glen Lyons of Acworth, Georgia; daughter Jane Maguire of Hiram, Georgia; daughter Kathi Calvin and son-in-law Charles Foshey of Pembroke, Massachusettts; daughter Virginia and son-in-law Joseph Hermann of Denver, Colorado; grandson Sean Lyons of Mableton, Georgia; granddaughter Kristen Zaslavsky of North Bethesda, Maryland; grandson Keith Lyons of Altamonte Springs, Florida; grandson Michael Calvin of Mansfield, Massachusetts; grandson Wesley Hermann of Colorado Springs, Colorado; granddaughter Leila Hermann of Denver, Colorado; five great-grandchildren; and sister Dorothy Faraday of New York, New York.

A Memorial service will be held Saturday, March 19th at 10am in the Historic Chapel of Swan Point Cemetery, Blackstone Blvd. Providence. The family gratefully acknowledges the skilled and affectionate care Ellen received at Saint Elizabeth Court and Saint Elizabeth Manor. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Saint Elizabeth Community, One Saint Elizabeth Way, East Greenwich, RI 02818.
