Ann Brooke Mason, age 92, died October 18, 2024. Born October 22, 1931, in New York City to Raymond Clyde Power and Ann Catlett Power, she was raised in Richmond, Virginia where she attended St. Catherine’s School. She later graduated from Wellesley College.
Ann Brooke was the beloved wife, for 57 years, of Robert Cook Mason. Before moving to Providence, she and her husband lived for three years in Morocco, while he served in the U.S. Navy. It was there that they developed their love of travel, which resulted in countless trips over the years, often to Italy. Despite living most of her life in New England, Ann Brooke was instantly recognizable by her distinctive Virginia accent.
Ann Brooke was active in the Providence community. For many years, she was a member of the Providence County Garden Club and the Junior League. She served on the board of the Providence Athenaeum and the Handicraft Club and was a member of the Providence Art Club, where she developed her talent for watercolors. Ann Brooke belonged to the Wednesday Club, a debating society; the National Society of the Colonial Dames; and the Pottery and Porcelain Club. She served as chair of the Radeke Memorial Garden committee at the RISD Museum and was active in the Associates. She loved flower arranging, studying Italian with her friends, and hosting parties in her garden.
She is survived by her two daughters, Sarah Brooke Mason of London and Abigail Benton Mason of Boston.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 on November 7, 2024, at St. Stephen’s Church, 114 George Street, Providence, RI. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the RISD Museum, the Providence Athenaeum, or a charity of your choice.
