Patrick D. Mooney, a devoted spouse to Barbara Mooney and cherished father to Patrick Mooney and Mark Mooney, passed away peacefully in his sleep on July 17, 2023, at the age of 76.
Born in Pittsfield, Massachusetts to the late Joseph and Frances (Doyle) Mooney. He was the second of four siblings - Joseph Mooney, Maureen Mooney Howard, and Thomas Mooney. He was a 1965 graduate of Pittsfield High School.
Pat married the love of his life, Barbara Rizzo in 1967. Shortly thereafter, they moved to Orlando, Florida where Pat honorably served our country as a member of the United States Air Force from 1966 to 1970. Shortly after being honorably discharged, the family moved to Portsmouth RI.
Pat spent most of his professional career in the hospitality business, leaving a lasting mark at Sheraton Islander Hotel on Goat Island and Pike Productions in Newport where he worked until his well-earned retirement.
Leaving a legacy generations long, Pat is survived by his wife Barbara, his son, Patrick Mooney and partner, Erin Herzog (Providence), former daughter-in-law, Jennifer Mooney (Swansea) as well as his son, Mark Mooney and wife, Ronilee Mooney (Rehoboth). He was blessed with five beautiful grandchildren—Patrick, Caelinn, Liam, Gianna, and Mason—who were the light of his life and brought immense joy to his heart. Pat's kindness and warmth extended beyond his immediate family, as a loving uncle and godfather to numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, his grandson Colin David Mooney, godchild Caitlin Baer and nephew Tom Rizzo.
In honoring his wish to contribute to the advancement of medical science, Pat's body was donated to Brown University Medical School. A memorial mass will be held on August 21, 2023 at 10:00 am at St. Barnabas Church (1697 East Main Road, Portsmouth, RI). We invite family and friends to join us as we celebrate a life well lived. The burial will be private at a later date.
The family kindly requests your thoughts and prayers. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to St. Jude's Children's Hospital, a cause that was close to Pat's heart and one he would have deeply appreciated. Click here to donate - https://raise.stjude.org/patmooney
May the memories of Pat's Irish wit and his love of family, lobster, and Newport, forever remain in our hearts. We will miss you, Pops!
