Carol M. Hunt, of Providence, died peacefully on Friday, September 9, 2022 at Tockwotton on the Waterfront. Carol was born Carol Ann Meehan on November 3, 1927 in Providence, RI to Helen (Burns) and George V. Meehan.
She attended St. Sebastian’s School, Elmhurst Academy, Maryland College for Women and Garland Junior College in Boston. On December 27, 1949, she married Andrew Hunt—her high school crush—and together they had seven children. Carol and Andy began their life together in Staten Island, NY, where Andy started his career in finance. Later, they settled in Barrington, RI, where Carol enjoyed life as a young wife and adoring mother in a boisterous household. Known for her wit, easy laugh and love of people, Carol made friends with ease and cherished her family and community. As her children left for college, she and Andy relocated to the East Side of Providence.
Carol and Andy were deeply committed to their faith and maintained a lifelong connection to St. Sebastian’s Church. Carol served for many years as a board member of Meehan Fund, Inc. eventually becoming its President. She was also as a long-standing Trustee of the Meehan Foundation, dedicating much of her time to philanthropy, especially supporting Brown University Medical School and Portsmouth Abbey School. Alongside Andy, Carol traveled widely and later loved telling stories of walking the Great Wall of China and visiting the Great Sphinx of Giza. After Andy died in 1998, Carol spent more time in Wakefield, where she played golf and bridge and passed days by the beach doting on a growing brood of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Carol is survived by her seven children: Martha Hunt-Sexton and husband Tom of Drake’s Island, Maine; Kevin Hunt and wife Christine of Naples, Florida; Peter Hunt and wife Betsy of Providence; Andrea Denby and Stephen Redihan of Providence; Megan Hunt Stewart and husband Rick of Warner, New Hampshire; Sarah Hunt of Harper, Texas; and Jim Hunt and wife Ashley Batting of Matunuck. She leaves, too, 15 grandchildren, and 17 great-grandchildren. Everyone who knew Carol will hold memories of her grace, sense of humor and generous spirit. The family would like to thank Alicia Lopes for her extraordinary care in Carol’s final years.
Funeral services will be private. In lieu of flowers, family and friends may make memorial contributions to the Carol and Andrew Hunt Scholarship Fund at Portsmouth Abbey School.
