Obituary for Ruth Edwards
Ruth Edwards passed away peacefully on February 26, 2022 at Wingate Residences on the East Side of Providence at the age of 95. She was born on January 12, 1927 in Franksville, Wisconsin.
Ruth was the beloved wife of the late John O. Edwards, sister of Peter Christofferson, the late John Christofferson, and the late Elda Dillonaire, all from Wisconsin, and the daughter of “Tony” and Freda Christofferson. She is survived by her daughters Kathleen Lewis of Lafayette, IN, and Joan Castle of Pawtucket, RI, and by her granddaughter Christina Ruth Castle of Providence, RI.
After a happy childhood in Franksville, Ruth went to and graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Chemistry in 1949 where she met her husband, John O. Edwards. They married in September of 1950 and moved to Providence, RI in 1952 when John joined the Department of Chemistry at Brown University and eventually became a professor. During John’s three decade career in the Chemistry Department, Ruth hosted graduate students and postdoctoral chemists from all corners of the world and developed close friendships with many.
In addition to teaching Sunday School and accepting clerical positions at various businesses, Ruth did volunteer work at Meeting Street School in fundraising, contributed to the establishment of English as a Second Language School at her church, tutored ESL students, and volunteered at the Camp Street Ministries Food Pantry. At Central Congregational Church, Ruth participated in a program to help distribute donations for Christmas presents for local children and families. Coming from a modest upbringing herself, giving back to others, and providing others with opportunities to succeed, became a central focus of Ruth’s adult life.
Ruth lived at Wingate Residences on the East Side from March of 2017 until her passing. The wonderful staff generously contributed to her well being through their loving kindness, their warmth and excellent competence in the care of their residents. Ruth’s family wishes to express many thanks to the staff at Wingate.
A memorial service and burial will be held in late spring. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Camp Street Ministries, 194 Camp Street, Providence, RI 02906.
