Obituary for K. Frederick Holst
K. Frederick Holst, 74 of Warwick, RI passed away on Saturday, July 15, 2017 at the Philip Hulitar Inpatient Hospice Center in Providence, following a six-week illness. Born June 3, 1943 in Providence, RI, Fred was the son of Dr. Karl A. Holst and Joyce (Smith) Holst. Fred was a lifelong resident of Pawtuxet Village on the Warwick/Cranston line.

Fred was a lifelong member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Pawtuxet. Following in his late father’s footsteps, he served in many capacities inlcuding, Sunday School Teacher, Youth Group Leader, Junior Warden, Eucharistic Minister, member of the Vestry and overall community leader.

One of Fred’s passions was being a member of The Pawtuxet Rangers, RI Militia. The Pawtuxet Rangers is one of the oldest existing chartered commands in the Country, established in 1774. Fred enlisted in 1975 as a member of the Musket Line. He advanced to the rank of Color’s Sergeant, Captain of the Colors, Adjutant Executive Officer and was promoted to Colonel in 1997 and was the Commanding Officer until 2004. Col Holst was the recipient of the Honorable Order of St. Barbara and the R.I. Meritorious Service Award. He was most recently the Liaison to the Centennial Legion.

Fred was a lifelong resident of Pawtuxet Village and was active in that community as a life member of the Pawtuxet Volunteer Fire Dept.; a founder and charter member of the Special Signal Fire Association and canteen truck; a life Gold Card member of the Pawtuxet Athletic Club; a former member of the Pawtuxet Village Association and Gaspee Day Committee and Harmony Lodge #9.

Fred graduated from St. Andrew’s School in Barrington, Class of ‘62 and was an active member of its Alumni Association for many years.

Fred is survived by his two sons, K. Andrew Holst of Frisco, TX (wife Amanda) and Nathan Holst of Rome, GA (wife Allison); two sisters Donna Carr of Mt. Airy, MD and Carla Holst of Waterford, CT; a niece and nephews and many cousins. He is also survived by his companion of the past seven years, Barbara (Wentworth) Platt of Tiverton.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday August 26th at 11am at Trinity Church in Pawtuxet. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Trinity Church, 139 Ocean Ave., Cranston, RI 02905.
