Obituary for Catherine :Cathy" "McMahon" Chimblo
Catherine “Kate” Chimblo née McMahon, 88, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 22, 2021 surrounded by her loving family in hospice care. Catherine was born on November 21, 1932 in Ahagha Kilmihil, County Clare, Ireland. She was the loving wife of the late Gus Chimblo of Cos Cob, Connecticut. Catherine was the youngest daughter of John and Margaret McMahon and the beloved sister of seven siblings. She is survived by her three children: son John Chimblo; son Michael Cimbalo and his wife Kerry; and daughter Constance Agnew and her husband Patrick. She was very proud of her five grandchildren: Katy, Scott, Lauren Cimbalo, Mary Kate and Ryan Agnew.
As a devout Catholic, Catherine devoted her life to serving others. She earned a nursing certification from Ramsgate and Margate General Hospital where she began her career in 1958. She later worked at Broomfield Hospital in Essex, England. In pursuit of the American Dream, Catherine immigrated to the United States in 1956 and settled in Cos Cob, Connecticut where she met her husband Gus and married in 1962. She continued nursing at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Stamford, Connecticut until she retired.
In her free time, Catherine enjoyed cooking exquisite Italian cuisine for her family using fresh vegetables from her garden and seafood caught by her husband. Additionally, she loved volunteering her time to charitable organizations within her community, such as Neighbor to Neighbor, The Fresh Air Fund and the Boy and Girl Scouts of America. She was an avid bowler and member of the Women’s International Bowling Congress. Catherine also enjoyed traveling the world with her family and friends. In her later years, she lived a very active lifestyle while at home in Rhode Island. She enjoyed spending time outside observing wildlife and tending to flowers in the garden. Catherine was a fan of professional baseball and affectionately followed the Boston Red Sox. She will always be remembered for her loving and generous character.
Memorial services will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in Catherine’s name can be made to A Wish Come True Foundation. Please use the following link or mailing address: https://www.awish.org/ 1010 Warwick Ave. Warwick, RI 02888.
