Obituary for Ellen Barnes
Ellen Barnes passed away Sunday at Miriam Hospital at the age of 100. She was an amazing and special lady- loved, respected and admired. Her husband, Alfred Barnes, the love of her life, passed away in 2002 after 66 years of marriage.
With a lovely elegant, poised presence, even at over 100, she was an inspiration.
Giving of herself to others, she was kind, unassuming, fair, her sweetness was infectious, and with her keen intellect, she was always ready to take on new challenges. To her every day was an adventure- even small things were to be treasured. She accepted individuals for who they were with gracious dignity and tried to find the positive in trying situations.
She loved life, was a fighter and possessed great independence. While she had a driver’s license, she never drove any distance until she was 85!
She had extensive formal training as an artist at various colleges and had a great love for ballet and theatre. At the age of 87, she re-discovered Shakespeare. She joined a club that presented readings of Will’s plays- always reading the script in advance! For over 40 years she and her husband were members of The Players at Barker Playhouse.
She instilled in her daughter a love of education and the arts and trips to museums were the norm.
As a young wife and mother, she was a designer in Providence and her work was featured in a national magazine. In 1955, she was employed at FM Global as an account executive and retired in 1980. Her hobby always involved painting- in canvas, glass, furniture and antique trays, some of them now grace her family’s homes.
Ellen lived long enough to know all of her 6 great-grandchildren well. She was an integral part of not only her daughter and 2 granddaughter’s lives, but her great grandchildren as well.
Ellen’s life had a long run and the final curtain was a great loss yes, but there are such fond memories never to be forgotten.
Ellen leaves behind her daughter, Ellen Barnes Selya of Newport, granddaughters Dawn Sherman and her husband Dr. Brian Sherman, their children Bradford and Samantha of Tallahassee, FL; Lori Ann Young and her husband Daniel Young, their children Paige, Daniel, William and Thomas of Dedham, MA. She was the sister of the late John Forslund.
Her funeral service will be held Saturday at 10 AM in the Redwood Chapel at Swan Point Cemetery, 585 Blackstone Blvd., Providence to which relatives and friends are invited. Burial will be private. Donations in her memory may be made to the Tockwotten Activity Fund, 500 Waterfront Drive, East Providence, RI 02906.
