Obituary for Nancy McDowell Baldwin
Nancy McDowell Baldwin, 92, died Monday, January 4, at St. Elizabeth Manor in Bristol, RI. Born in Providence, Nancy was the daughter of the late James and Katherine Linke McDowell.
She was the wife of the late John L. Baldwin, whom she met during college when they both worked during the summers in Boothbay Harbor, ME. Married for 47 years, they raised two children, John (Jay) McDowell Baldwin and Sarah Church Baldwin, in Sewickley, PA.
Nancy was a graduate of the Lincoln School and of Wellesley College, where she majored in psychology. She was an active member of the Garden Club of Sewickley, and a longtime volunteer with Meals on Wheels, often taking along a grandchild to show them the importance of serving others. She also enjoyed volunteering for Generations Together at Osborne Elementary School, where she spent time with young children in the classroom.

Nancy and John were avid paddle tennis and tennis players, and attended all four Grand Slam tournaments. They loved to travel, which Nancy continued to do after John’s death. In her lifetime, she visited numerous countries and continents. She never returned from her travels without meaningful souvenirs for her children and grandchildren. She also took each grandchild on their own trip when they were 10 years old, including to Yellowstone National Park, Alaska, and the Grand Canyon. Nancy was an excellent baker, and was especially known for her Kilarney Bread and lemon bars, which live on thanks to those who have her secret recipes.

She leaves her son, John Baldwin, of Pittsburgh, PA; her daughter, Sarah Baldwin, of Pawtucket, RI; and five grandchildren: Ulysses, Josephine, Katherine, Hannah, and Meghan. She will be remembered as a caring, loving mother, a fun and adventurous grandmother, and a good friend to many.

Due to current Covid-19 conditions, the burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Humane Society of the United States (1255 23rd Street, NW, Suite 450, Washington, DC 20037, www.humanesociety.org/) or Guide Dogs for the Blind (P.O. Box 151200, San Rafael, CA 94915, guidedogs.com).
