Obituary for Lorraine Landel Nichols
Nichols, Lorraine Landel of McLean, Virginia, formerly of Providence, passed away peacefully at her home, surrounded by loving family. Born on July 4, 1925 in Williamsville, NY, she was the wife of the late David H. Nichols MD to whom she was married for fifty years. Predeceased by her son, David L., she is survived by four children: Laurie Cochran of Newton, MA, Nancie Svensen of Mountain City, TN, Daniel A. of McLean, VA, Julie Steindler of McLean, VA, and eleven grandchildren.
Lorraine attended the Juilliard School of Music and was a featured operatic soloist in numerous Radio City Music Hall shows. She was the paid soprano soloist at St. James Church in New York City as well as understudy for the lead roles in the original Broadway musicals “Carousel” and “Oklahoma!” Lorraine recounted a story of a thirty-block walk in Manhatten with Oscar Hammerstein during which he advised her to leave the stage: “You’re a nice kid, this isn’t the life for you.” Taking the advice to heart, Lorraine married her beloved life partner. She masterfully balanced supporting him in his accomplished career, homemaking and motherhood. She will be dearly remembered for her boundless love for family, kindness, generosity, creativity, joyful celebrations, endless energy, flair for tasteful fashion, and devotion to God.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Thursday, February 2 at 11:00 am at St. Sebastian Church, Cole Ave., Providence, RI. Burial will be at Swan Point Cemetery, Providence. In lieu of flowers, donations are gratefully accepted in her memory to the elder care of religious at: Sisters of St. Francis, Holy Name Province, 4421 Lower River Rd., Stella Niagara, NY 14144
