Obituary for Herbert Bruno Weinman
Herbert B. Weinman passed away on January 18, one day before his ninety-third birthday. Born on January 19,1927 in Bielefeld, Germany, he was lucky to have a father (who adopted him as Herb’s birth father died when he was an infant) who moved the family, who was Jewish, safely out of Germany. Herb’s sister and father left in 1934, and Herb and his mother joined them in 1935. They settled on Chicago’s South Side which young Herbie loved, learning English quickly as he always said, “on the streets of Chicago” and later moving to the northern suburbs where he graduated from high school.
After graduating from the Illinois Institute of Technology, he took a job in Indiana where he met his beloved wife Elaine. After a few years, work took them to Syracuse, New York, when their oldest of six children was eight years old. They were happy in Central New York where they spent most of their lives;
Herb was an avid Syracuse University basketball and football fan. He spent his career as a plastics engineer but also taught drafting and math to adults. He had a phenomenal work ethic but was also a voracious reader with a passion for history, especially American history, as well as classical music. But most of all he loved his family. He was kind and had a great sense of humor. He treasured lifelong friendships which he maintained until the very end of his life and made new ones when he moved to Rhode Island in 2016. Herb’s family and friends miss him deeply;
He is survived by his son David Weinman (Mindy Paticoff Weinman), Joseph Weinman (Sylvie Herrou ), Elizabeth Weinman (Kevin Woest), Susan Weinman (Andrew Rosenzweig), Judith Weinman (David Katz), daughter-in-law Debra Lusk, and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. He is predeceased by Elaine, whom he took amazing care of in her last years, his son Daniel, and sister, Lottie Weinman Abt, who died last year.
Herb’s family is very grateful to the wonderful staff at Wingate on the East Side who provided loving care. A memorial service will be private. Gifts in his memory can be made to the Anti-Defamation League, the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, or Planned Parenthood.
