Obituary for Mary Kennedy Moore
Mary Kennedy Moore died peacefully on July 13, 2016 at Tockwotton on the Waterfront in East Providence, RI. She was 90 years old.
Mary was born in Youngstown, Ohio on August 27, 1925, and grew up in Sewickley, PA. Her father, Andrew Milliken Kennedy, was an engineer, and her mother, Anne Roper Kennedy, was the youngest of a large family from Petersburg, VA. Mary grew up with three brothers: Andy, Darcy, and Pat, and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
After finishing elementary school in Sewickley, Mary attended the Oldfields School in Maryland and Sweet Briar College in Virginia. When the United States entered World War II, her brothers enlisted, and Mary left college to be with her mother in Sewickley. She met her husband-to-be, Samuel T. Moore Jr., on a blind date at a mutual friend’s house, where they watched a boxing match on a small black and white TV. They were engaged in two weeks and married six months later.
Sam and Mary Moore lived in Providence, RI for 23 years, and spent many summers in Westport, MA. Mary went back to working part-time, and eventually became a full-time secretary at Lincoln School. The Moore family moved to Fairfield, CT in 1974, but kept in touch with friends in their beloved Providence and (equally beloved) Westport.
After 46 years of marriage, Sam Moore died of heart failure in 1997. In 2000 Mary moved to Bagy Wrinkle Cove Condominium in Warren, RI. After a bad fall in 2009, Mary moved into assisted living in Warren; as her arthritis worsened she moved to Epoch in Providence, and finally to Tockwotton.
Mary is survived by her sons, Samuel T. Moore, III of Warren, RI and John S. Moore of Providence, RI; her daughter, Nan Moore Froberg; her son-in-law, William Froberg; and her two grandsons, John and Matthew Froberg, of Acton, MA. We will miss her sense of humor, her kindness, and her lifelong interest in people. We are grateful to the many caregivers in the greater Providence area that have given her excellent care over the last 7 years.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Audubon Society, or other charities for environmental protection and conservation, are welcome.
The funeral service will be held Friday at 11am in the Chapel of Swan point Cemetery, Blackstone Blvd. Providence.
