Obituary for Gretchen Elliott Viall

Gretchen Elliott Viall passed away July 9, 2016 in Providence. Born in Plainville, Massachusetts, she was the daughter of the late Glendon Mandeville and Margaret Horne Elliott. She was the beloved wife of the late William A. Viall II for fifty five years and loving mother of William Angell Viall III and grandmother of Henry Angell Viall. She also leaves her brother, Jack Elliott.
Gretchen attended Lincoln School, Providence, Finch College in Manhattan, Tufts University in Boston, and the Orton-Gillingham Institute in Boston.
She taught at Lincoln School in Providence, The Providence Public School System, and tutored children with dyslexia. She was a longtime Red Cross volunteer.
Gretchen served on the board of The Fine Arts Committee, Museum of Art, Rhode Island School of Design, President of The Pottery & Porcelain Club, member of American Ceramic Circle, China Students Club, Boston, Connecticut Ceramic Study Group, Historic Deerfield, The Cosmopolitan Club, Manhattan, The Handicraft Club, Mt. Vernon Ladies Association, National Society of Colonial Dames of America in RI, The Wedgewood Society of New York, The Wedgewood Society of Boston, The Gilbert Stuart Memorial, The Hope Club, The Dunes Club, The Agawam Hunt Club and The Providence Art Club.
The burial will be private. In accordance with Gretchen’s wishes, there will be no memorial service.
In lieu of flowers, please give donations to the Providence Athenaeum or the Providence Animal Rescue League.
