Obituary for Winifred A. Kelley
Kelley, Winifred A., died January 4th at the Morgan Health Center in Johnston. Born in Cranston she moved to Johnston in 1954 and summered in Bonnett Shores for 45 years.
Winifred was a graduate of University of R.I. with a degree in Bacteriology and received a Masters from U Mass Boston in Education.
She was a Biology teacher at Cranston West High School for many years retiring in 1998. Prior to that she was a medical technologist and instructor at Norwood Hospital, Norwood MA and at Lawrence and Memorial Hospital in New London, CT. and St Luke’s in New Bedford.
She was a charter member of St Robert Bellarmine Church in Johnston where she was a Eucharistic Minister with special ministry at Cherry Hill Nursing Home. She was also on their Auditing Committee and was co-chair of their Catholic Charity Fund Drive.
She was a member of the St Xavier Alumni Association and the University of R.I. Alumni Association where she was her class agent. She was also a member of the R.I. State Retired Teachers Association, the Greater Providence Retired Teachers Association, the Mt. Pleasant Senior center, The Catholic Book Club and the Godspeed Opera Foundation. She was a longtime volunteer at McAuley House.
A longtime summer resident of Bonnett Shores she was a member of their Woman’s Club and was Treasurer of the Bonnett Shores Fire District from 1982 to 1994.
She leaves her brother Francis’s widow Lucy as well as many nieces and nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews. She was sister of the late Fr. Bennet C.P. (Joseph), Marie C. Kelley, John Kelley and his wife Isabel, Paul Kelley Esq., a former Public Defender and his wife Anna; Arthur, Francis and Thomas Kelley.
Her Mass of Christian Burial will be on Saturday January 15th at 10 am in St Robert Bellarmine Church, 1804 Atwood Ave. Johnston. Facemasks and distancing will be required and the Mass will be livestreamed on the Church’s Facebook page. Calling hours are omitted. Donations in her memory may be made to St. Robert’s Food Pantry or McAuley House.
