Obituary for William G. San Antonio, Jr.
San Antonio, William G San Antonio, Jr., 82, passed away November 10th after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer's. Born in Providence to William G Sr and Elena (Antonelli), Bill was raised in the Silver Lake section of Providence and graduated from Mt Pleasant High School, where he met the love of his life, Barbara. They were married for 50 years before her death in 2010. Bill joined the Army after High School and famously went AWOL to marry Barbara; their wedding was planned in 3 weeks and had over 200 attendees. Bill and Barbara were stationed in Germany for close to two years. Upon his return he and his brother Douglas operated Stanley Trucking (later WSA Trucking) in Pawtucket for nearly 30 years.
Although much of Bill's life was diesel and grease he had a very artistic side which he fulfilled by enrolling in both photography and watercolor classes at RISD, building a darkroom in his basement, and dragging his children to museums in every city they visited. He valued education greatly, and was very proud of the fact that he earned his bachelor's degree from Bryant College in 1976 by attending evening classes. Bill later taught Transportation and Logistics classes for evening programs at Bryant, and continued to be inspired by the university experience. He also served as the President of the Rhode Island Truck Owner's Association for many years, and was actively engaged in their lobbying efforts. He loved to cook, and took great pride in putting together dinners for family during the holidays. He loved spending time at the beach in the summer, and complaining about the snow in the winter.
One of the real cornerstones of Bill's life was his faith; he was a devout communicant of St Bartholomew's in Silver Lake, St Pius in Providence, St. Augustine's in Providence (for nearly 30 years), and Christ the King in Kingston. He volunteered whenever possible to assist with church functions and events, and in retirement devoted a large portion of his time to church efforts at local food pantries and soup kitchens.
Bill was predeceased by his wife Barbara and his brother Douglas. He is survived by his sister Corrine San Antonio of Florida, sister-in-law Elanor San Antonio of Cranston, sister-in-law Joan Mueller of Riverside, his sons William G III (and wife Seana) and Scott (and wife Michelle), and his daughter Sabrina (and husband Richard Allberry). Bill leaves behind 9 adoring grandchildren, Elana, Siobhan, Gabriel, William G. IV, Dante, Angelina, Carmine, Roman, and John Paul, and one great grandson, David. He also leaves behind nephew Douglas Jr (and wife Kimberly), and nieces Jenna and Corin.
Bill will be missed for his charm and his wit, his generosity, his work ethic and his honesty, his faith and his humility, but most of all for his simple and pure unconditional love for friends and family.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday November 16th at 10am in St. Augustine's Church in Providence followed by a burial at St. Ann's cemetery in Cranston. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers please donate in Bill's name to the Rhode Island Food Bank. Condolences may be left at monahandrabblesherman.com
