Obituary for Thomas P. O'Day
Thomas Patrick O’Day of Providence, 87, died peacefully Saturday evening.
Born in West Haven, Connecticut, he was the son of Thomas O’Day and Mary Marinan O’Day, both of County Clare, Ireland.
Thomas worked the office night shift with the FBI until he enlisted in the US Navy as a SeaBee in July, 1944.  He was stationed at Davisville, RI, where he joined the 29th CB unit.  Thomas’ ship landed on Samar Island, Philippines in April 1945 and he was there for VJ day.  He then joined the 122nd SeaBee unit in Tsingtau, China, embedded with the 6th Marine division.  He returned from WWII in June 1946.
Taking advantage of the GI Bill, Thomas enrolled in the chemistry program at Providence College in September of 1947.
After graduation, he was employed at Olin Corporation in New Haven, CT, as a chemist. He attended night law school at the University of Connecticut from 1955 until 1960. He became a patent attorney at Olin where he worked for his entire professional life. Thomas led the patent department for many years until his retirement.
Thomas valued education, hard work, and a good laugh.  He traveled internationally for work and recreation and was a regular on Norwegian cruise liners through the fjords and boarded icebreakers to Svalbard.  He also enjoyed vacationing on European canal barges and transport ships.  His favorite countries included New Zealand, Australia, Japan and South Africa.  He always said that his greatest education came from travel and from talking to people wherever he went.
Thomas’ children Geena, Thomas, Christina, and Mia will miss him dearly as will his adored grandson, Noah Ravshan. They are grateful for his devotion to them, service to his country, and the values of hard work and honesty that he instilled in them.
They wish him safe passage on this most important of voyages.
Donations in his memory may be made to Providence College, 1 Cunningham Square, Providence, RI, 02918 or St Sebastian’s Church, Cole Ave., Providence, RI 02906.
The funeral and burial will be held on Tuesday, March 4th at 11am at St. Sebastian Catholic Church in Providence, RI.
