Obituary for Sylvia D. Loferski
Sylvia Dolores Loferski, age 92 , of Providence peacefully passed into eternal rest surrounded by her loving children on December 13, 2017. Born in Plains, PA, she was the daughter of Anna (Novak) and John Sweeda, the fourth of 5 children. Sylvia was the beloved wife of late Brown University Professor Joseph John Loferski. They moved to Providence in 1961 and she has been an active member of St. Sebastian's Church where she was a Eucharistic Minister and church choir member since 1962.
Sylvia graduated from high school in 1943 and worked as a teleprinter operator at Western Union during World War II. She loved music and sang with the Rhode Island Civic Chorale. When she was 85 she made a CD of Christmas music enjoyed by family and friends.
Sylvia was a world traveler and with her late husband visited places around the world from A to Z, including spending 3 years in Poland and 1 year in Holland. She was a gardener who filled her home with flowers and cooked delicious meals daily. She brought joy and happiness to her family and friends by entertaining everyone with her wonderful stories.
Sylvia was the devoted mother of Marianne Fleury (Al, MD) of Chevy Chase, MD, Patricia (Robert Seal) of Ashburn, VA, Joseph of Blacksburg, VA, Barbara, MD of Providence, RI, Michael (Jeannie) of Aurora, OH, and Sharon Engler (Bill) of Martha's Vineyard, MA.
Sylvia was the beloved grandmother of 16 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. She was the dear sister of the late Isabelle Yanaitis, Joseph Sweeda, and Edward Sweeda of Hudson, PA, and is survived by her sister Irene Latosek of Kendall Park, NJ, and 21 nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, December 16th at 11am in St Sebastian Church, Cole Ave., Providence. Calling hours Friday, in the Monahan Drabble Sherman Funeral Home, 230 Waterman St., Providence from 4-7pm. Burial will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to Brown University, Engineering Light Court, c/o Richard Marshall, Development, PO Box 1893, Providence, R.I. 02912.
