Obituary for Sydney "Spider" Royster
Sydney “Spider” Royster, 98, of East Providence, a former Merchant Seaman, passed away on March 9, 2022 at HopeHealth Hulitar Hospice Center in Providence, RI.
Born in East Providence, he was the son of the late Archibald C. Royster, Sr. and Dollie Frances (Greene) Royster. He was an East Providence resident for many years. For the last eight months of his life, he lived on the East Side of Providence with his niece Dollie Catala.
Spider leaves a son Jerome “Jerry” Spinola, 4 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren. He also leaves many nieces, nephews and cousins to mourn his loss.
Spider worked as a driver for Harris Furs for many years. He enjoyed sharing comical stories about the times he delivered and picked up fur coats from his customers.
Spider loved to dance and was often the first one on the dance floor. At family gatherings, he showed off his fancy footwork by dancing the jitterbug, the moonwalk and his imitation of James Brown was second to none. He was especially proud of participating in a dance competition at the Apollo Theatre in New York where he placed higher than many professional dancers.
He was predeceased by his siblings, Victoria “Lovie“ Carew, Vertie Lorraine Bickham, Julian C. Royster, Archibald Royster Jr., Joseph “Kenny” Royster, June Bernice Smith, Beverly Catala and Shirley Cole.
Calling hours are Wednesday, March 16th from 10am to 11:00am followed by a funeral service from 11:00am to 11:30 in the Monahan Drabble Sherman Funeral Home located at 210 Taunton Ave. East Providence. Masks would be appreciated .Burial will be private.
