Obituary for Steven J. Varela
Varela, Steven, J., 66, of Arrowhead Trail, Smithfield, died Wednesday at home. He was the loving husband, soul mate and best friend of Darlene (Terrien) Varela.
Born in Providence a son of the late Joseph and Mary (Rose) Varela, he was a Smithfield resident for 24 years.
Steven was an investigator for the Department of Children, Youths and Families for the State of R.I for 29 years retiring earlier this year. Prior to that he had worked for the state as a correctional officer. He was a 1975 graduate of Providence College.
When not working he and his wife loved to travel. They were blessed that they were able to do so and they visited many exotic places including three favorites, Egypt, Turkey and Santorini, Greece.
Besides his wife the leaves two sons: Kazuo S. and Keijiro D. Varela both of California, two Brothers: Mark Varela of East Providence and Gary Varela of Georgia and 3 sisters: Lynne DelGado and Mary Ann Fonseca both of East Providence and Bernadette Varela of Providence his Godmother Josephine Braz of East Providence as well as many nieces nephews and friends.
Visitation will be held WEDNESDAY from 12:30pm to 2:30pm in the Historic Chapel of Swan Point Cemetery with the funeral service at 2:30. Burial will follow. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to American Cancer Society, 931 Jefferson Blvd., #3004, Warwick, R.I. 02906.
