Obituary for Ruth Miriam Thornton
Ruth Miriam Thornton(Jenckes) of Providence was born in 1927 in Youngstown, Ohio, Ruth came to Providence to attend RISD, graduating in Fashion Design. Daughter of the late Ruth MacKay and William Jenckes, she is survived by husband Robert Owren Thornton of Providence, sister Frances Christensen of Burlington, VT, children Jefrey Crook of Bristol, Peter Thornton of Providence, and Alison Chesley of Durham, NH, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. A life-long singer, Ruth was an alto for many years with St. Stephen’s Choir, Central Congregational Church, and VoX - Voices of Christmas. She was a loyal volunteer for Hamilton House and docent for the Roger Williams Park Zoo. Friends are invited to the Monahan Drabble Sherman Funeral Home 230 Waterman St., Providence on Saturday at 10am and to follow to a graveside service in North Burial Ground, Bristol for 11am. Calling hours Friday, March 29th from5-7pm. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the RISD Annual Fund, Two College Street, Providence, RI 02903.
