Obituary for Russell W. Field, Jr.
Russell W. Field, Jr., 96, died on December 23, 2014 in Providence, R.I. He was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Carolyn “Sukie” Sherman Field.
Son of Flora Buckingham Grout and Russell W. Field, Mr. Field was born in Barrington, RI and was a communicant of St. John’s Church. He graduated from Tabor Academy, Marion, Massachusetts, while there he was an exchange student at N.P.E.A. Ploen, Germany. After graduating from Brown University in 1940, he was employed by American Steel And Wire Co.
He joined the Army in the Spring of 1941, subsequently he served with the 15th Air Force in Italy flying 50 missions as a Pilot-Weather Officer and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross.
In 1945 Mr. Field joined Brownell & Field Co., now known as Autocrat. He became President, retiring in 1979.
His business affiliations included, founding member of DineMor, Inc., National Coffee Association; founding member of the Junior Board of the National Tea Association; Chairman of the Legislative Committee of the Providence Chamber of Commerce. He also served as a Trustee of Citizens Bank, a Director of Colonial Laundry, Chairman of the Rhode Island Industrial Foundation, and a Director of Vector.
Mr. Field has served a Trustee or Director of: Barrington District Nursing Association; Barrington Public Library and Chairman; Edgehill, Newport; Hallworth House; Providence Public Library; Providence District Nurses; RISD and Roger Williams Hospital.
He was a member of: Appalachian Mountain Club; Barrington Players, President; Barrington Red Cross; Barrington Yacht Club, Commodore; Catboat Association;  Hope Club, New Bedford Yacht Club; New England Beetle Catboat Association, President, Providence Rotary Club, President; Rhode Island Commodores; Smith Hill Girls Club; Squantum Club; Turks Head Club; Weekapaug Group; The Corinthians; The Cruising Club of America; the Twenty Hundred Club, Commodore, and the Walker’s Island Yacht Club.
He is survived by three daughters: Carol Anne Bennett, Providence, RI;  Deborah Field Byers, Dover, NH; and Martha Field Hodgman, Wenham, MA. and by his companion Anne B. Jencks. He is also survived by six grandchildren and five great grandchildren. His daughter Margaret Field DeMarrais predeceased him.
With all his family, he enthusiastically enjoyed sailing and skiing.
A memorial service will be held at St. John’s Church, Barrington, RI, on Saturday, January 17, 2015 at 11AM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. John’s Church, Barrington, RI.
