Ruby Jane McOsker, age 5, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, November 4, 2023, at her home in Providence, Rhode Island.
Ruby, rarest of the rare, was a member of a tiny community of people with Schaaf-Yang Syndrome.
Ruby was happiness and joy; the hardest working person any of her friends and family have known. She was beloved by her peers, community members, and family. The Schaaf-Yang global family knew her well and, despite geography, remain very close.
She taught everyone she knew how to meet others where they are, to let go of judgement and thresholds, and to find joy and pleasure in the reflection of peers and family. Ruby was happy just to be herself. She set a standard of self-acceptance we should all learn from.
Ruby had just recently returned home from a successful intensive program in Chicago at the Shirley Ryan Ability Lab, where she demonstrated her resilient strength, intelligence, and joy. She was a student at the Meeting Street School, and a beloved community member of East Side Nursery School. She had a strong bond with her favorite pony, Poe, at the Greenlock Therapeutic Riding Center, as well as deep mutual love and pride at her achievements with her other therapists.
She is survived by brother, Maxwell McOsker, her mom and dad - Laura Mullen and Benjamin McOsker, her lifelong companion and aide Susan O’Connell, and her grandparents, Arthur and Nancy Mullen and Ann Spence.
The family will be receiving family and friends beginning at 10am on Saturday November 11, 2023 in the Redwood Chapel in Swan Point Cemetery followed by at Memorial Services at 11am. In lieu of flowers, consider a donation to the Greenlock Therapeutic Riding Center, a place Ruby loved. Greenlock Therapeutic Riding, 59 Summer St. Rehoboth, MA 02769. https://www.greenlock.org/
