Obituary for Robert W. Lavoie
Robert W. Lavoie, 78, of Cranston, died Saturday at R.I. Hospital after being stricken at home. Born in Worcester MA. He was the son of the late George and Jeannette (Buckley) Lavoie and has been a Cranston resident for almost 40 years.
He attended New England School of Art and Design, and after holding a position as Art Director at Mark III Studios he went out on his own to form Lavoie Design Studios. Years later, upon closing the doors on his own venture, he worked diligently as a small engine mechanic using skills he learned from his father to provide for his family.
His passion was building and restoring vintage motorcycles, and he loved to ride. Years ago Bob and his father built a motorcycle the he raced at Daytona. He built bikes with the help of his children, and recently pulled his art background into designing a custom motorcycle and building it with the help of his friend, Ron Burnham. He was a force of nature and loved bonding with those close to him over a shared love of a machine.
He loved to live life on his terms, and didn’t let age slow him down, still riding and building bikes up to the end. He was intelligent, a voracious reader, curious, and had an unusual sense of humor that he loved to share with those around him.
He passed his passions and his skill sets on to his children (and anyone else who wanted to learn from him) and we could not be more grateful for it.
He leaves his brother, Richard Lavoie of Fiskeville, RI and his children; Kasia Coleman of Petaluma, CA, Jenna Lavoie of San Francisco, CA, and their mother Claudia Heusler-Lyons of Petaluma, CA and Conor Lavoie of Cranston, RI and his mother Kristina Lavoie of Providence, RI. He also leaves Ann Shugrue, whom he loved dearly, and numerous friends and extended family who will miss him. He was the root of a family tree that fell off the page. Calling hours Tuesday January 2, 2018 from 5-8 at Monahan, Drabble, Sherman Funeral Home 230 Waterman St., Providence. Burial will be private. Donations in his memory may be made to The Mike Rowe Works Foundation, 1207 4th Street, PH 1, Santa Monica, CA 90401.
