Obituary for Robert Arthur Ramsden
Robert Arthur Ramsden, 80, of Merrick Street, Rumford, died on June 26 at home with his loving family by his side. Robert was born in Providence, a son of the late James and Grace (Rawlinson) Ramsden.
Robert began his lengthy career in textiles after marrying Justine Mackie in 1958 and working for her family’s business, Mackie Spinning Company, in Sumter, S.C. He then spent many years in sales for Carolina Maiden Corporation and Bishop & Company before launching his own textile business, RARities, a clever take on his initials.
Golf was his passion, and he was a long-time member of the Wannamoisett Country Club in Rumford. There was no better teacher on the course. He passed his love of the game down to his daughters and grandchildren, always patient and kind as he made subtle corrections to grip and stance. Robert was a 1953 graduate of Philips Exeter Academy in Exeter, NH, and attended Brown University in Providence.
He leaves his two daughters, Jill Ramsden and her husband Ted Trowbridge of Rumford, and Mackie Ramsden Feeney and her husband Dan of Merrimac, MA. He leaves five grandchildren, Hunter, Blake, and Spencer Trowbridge, and Tyler and Jesse Feeney. He also leaves a brother Richard J. Ramsden and his wife Sallie of Lyme, NH; a sister Lorna R. McCollum of New London, NH; and his dear friend Sandra Hart of Fort Meyers, FL.
There will be a memorial service in the Historic Chapel at Swan Point Cemetery, Blackstone Blvd, Providence on June 30 at 2:00 p.m. A private burial will take place at Swan Point prior to the service. Calling hours are respectfully omitted. Donations in his memory may be made to Hope Hospice & Palliative Care of RI, 1085 North Main Street, Providence, RI 02904.
