Obituary for Robert A. Robinson
Robinson, Robert A. Robinson, 88, of providence died early Saturday morning after a long illness.  His wife of almost sixty years, Ann Harding Robinson, died in 2005.
Born on September 11, 1925, he was the first child of Robert and Ethel Robinson.  He grew up in Thomaston Connecticut. After graduating from Thomaston High School he served in the US Army  in World War II. Wounded in the Battle of the Bulge, he spent two years in army hospitals enduring multiple surgeries to repair a badly shattered leg. While in a hospital on Cape Cod he met a young nurse named Ann Harding. They were married on June 7, 1947.

Mr. Robinson earned an A.B. From Brown University in 1950 and a Masters in 1952. Until 1954, he taught English literature at Brown and the University of Illinois: after that, he began a long and successful business career. At Colonial Bank and Trust Company in Waterbury Connecticut, he became head of the Trust Department.  In 1966 his career took him to  New York City and the Church Pension Group, a venerable institution providing pensions for Episcopal clergy and laity. There he served as CEO and President for almost two decades: he was justly proud of the excellent pensions provided by the CPG.

Mr. Robinson was always active in civic life and was especially grateful that he was able to serve as a trustee of the Bugher Foundation, a private foundation devoted to cardiovascular research. Particularly through its grants to the American Heart Association, the Bugher Foundation has funded groundbreaking research in stroke and heart disease.

Mr. Robinson greatly enjoyed his memberships at the Hope  Club in Providence RI, the Union Club in New York City , the Metropolitan Club in Washington DC and the Athenaeum in London.

He is survived by a daughter, Gayllis R. Ward, a son in law, James B. Clemence and a brother, Walter Robinson.
A Requiem Eucharist will be held Tuesday at 11am in St. Martin Church, Orchard Ave. Providence. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Thomaston Historical Society, 158 Main St., Thomaston, CT  06787. Condolences may be left at monahandrabblesherman.com
