Obituary for Richard R. Sawyer
Richard R. Sawyer of Pawtucket, 59, died Saturday on December 23rd at home. Born in Providence, he was the son of the late Dr. Carl S. and Mary (Doliber) Sawyer. He lived in Pawtucket for 25 years, and was a self-employed contractor in the Providence area, having previously lived in Providence and Oregon. He spent much of his time restoring and enjoying the family farm in So. Royalton, VT which was built in the late 1700’s.
A graduate of Moses Brown and the University of Oregon, Richard was quick witted, with an incisive sense of humor and a masterful memory for trivia. He loved old movies and appreciated art, music and good craftsmanship. He took a particular interest in spending time with his nieces and nephews, and their children. He was a gifted athlete and avid softball player, playing in several co-ed leagues in RI and in Oregon, and he was a lifelong lover of dogs.
He leaves his brothers and sisters: Carl D. Sawyer (Ava) of South Kingstown, Eric S. Sawyer (Pamela) of Bolton, CT.; Elizabeth Fitzgibbons (Paul) of Hope; Mary D. Sawyer (William Allinder) of Trimble, MO; Laura D. Sawyer of Sharon, MA.; David F. Sawyer (Caroline) of Foxborough, MA; and Peter W. Sawyer of West Warwick. He also leaves 5 nieces and nephews: Elizabeth Krueger (Sean), and Margaret, Alys, Steven (Dawn) and Daniel (Erica Medeiros) Sawyer, as well as 2 great nephews.
A memorial service will be held in the Community Church of Providence on Saturday, January 20, at 11:00 a.m., with a reception to follow.
Donations in his memory may be made to the Hope Hospice & Palliative Care Rhode Island, or the Providence Animal Rescue League.
