Obituary for Richard Paul Manning
Richard Paul Manning died suddenly while cycling around Providence, Rhode Island on April 6, 2019. Prior to retirement, Richard worked for 30 years at Brown University where he was the Archivist for the Department of Modern Culture and Media. He was involved in the shift from the Semiotics Program to the current Department of Modern Culture and Media. A true cine- and video-phile, Richard enlivened and enriched the department with his encyclopedic knowledge of film, video, and television, and he worked tirelessly and with enthusiasm on the events that tied MCM to other units on campus and to the RI public (the French Film Festival, the Africana Film Festival, the Queer Film Festival, the MCM Cinematique, Magic Lantern Cinema, and so many others). Richard was also a sports and sports statistic addict – regularly scanning the sporting world for interesting facts and arcane statistical anomalies.
Richard Manning was born to Albert Luther Manning and Pauline Elizabeth Manning, both of Flint, Michigan, in May 1956. Richard received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mathematics from The University of Michigan and a Masters of Arts in Philosophy from Brown University. Richard was preceded in death by his Father and Mother and is survived by his brother, Dr. Ray Manning, of Long Beach, California.
A celebration of Richard’s life is scheduled for Monday, 15 April from 4pm until 7pm at the Monahan, Drabble & Sherman Funeral Home, 230 Waterman St. Providence with remembrances being shared at 6pm. All are welcome to join in this remembrance.
Donations in his memory may be made to Seekonk Animal Shelter 100 Peck Street, Seekonk, MA 02771
