Obituary for Patrick "Al' Kelly
Patrick A. “Al” Kelly, 88, died on February 20, 2017. Born in the Fox Point section of Providence in 1928, he was the son of the late Richard and Mary J. (Brassil) Kelly. He was the loving brother of the late Rev. Raymond M. Kelly, Richard, and Mary J. Kelly. Al was also the devoted stepson of the late Margaret Harrington Kelly, and stepbrother to the late Adelaide O’ Neill, Helen McCormick and Timothy J Harrington. Al was a proud alumnus of LaSalle Academy and Providence College and received his Master’s from URI.
He worked many years as a librarian at Bryant University retiring in 1991. Prior to that he was a librarian in Warwick. He also served honorably in the US Army stationed in the Philippines.
Al was a daily communicant of St Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church in Providence and spent his time serving that community as well as his brother, Father Ray’s parish, St Patrick’s on Smith Hill. He volunteered many hours for his passion- The Right To Life. He was a charter member of the Fatima Council, Knights of Columbus.
Al leaves behind many O’Neill and McCormick nieces and nephews, Brassil cousins, family in Beara, County Cork, Ireland and also many devoted friends. His sharp wit and Irish humor will be missed.
The Funeral will begin on Thursday at 9am in the Monahan Drabble Sherman Funeral Home, 230 Waterman St. Providence with a Mass of Christian Burial in St Joseph’s Church, Hope St Providence RI at 10:30. Burial will follow at Mount St Mary’s Cemetery, Pawtucket. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Mother of Life Center, 400 Atwells Ave. Providence, R.I. 02909.
