It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Michael "Mike" or “Mick” John Principe II of Central Falls, R.I. on July 9, 2024. Born on January 11, 1954, in Providence, and having grown up in Bristol, R.I., Mike lived a life filled with passion, dedication, and a love for helping others.
Mike showed an intense passion for football. At just 14, he began his journey with the Central Falls Lions. He played football himself and excelled as a boxer. He even tried out for the Patriots! Moving on from a job as a machinist, he focused on youth football with the Lincoln Rams and Cumberland Colts. One of his most proud moments was his acknowledgment as a Founding Father of the Lincoln Lions. His next stop was in high school football with the Cumberland Clippers as Freshman Head Coach and was promoted to Varsity Head Coach in Burrillville. In his personal time, he advised kids as a boxing coach at the Cumberland Boys and Girls Club too, further making football and boxing his way of life. Mike's ability to inspire others and help them believe in themselves was unparalleled. He was a mentor and source of strength for many young athletes, encouraging hard work and perseverance. Not to mention winning many accolades and awards amongst his teams.
Mike was deeply connected to the Grundy's Gym family in Central Falls, where he was cherished by all who knew him. Beyond coaching, Mike had a flair for fashion, creativity and self-expression. He enjoyed classic films, painting, reading, antiques, superheroes, comic books, rock and roll, singing, dancing, and analyzing sports strategies. Football season was his favorite time of year, and he was always ready to discuss plays or predict outcomes. His sharp wit, charm and humor, plus infectious laughter made him a joy to be around. His caring heart extended to animals, and he often spoke fondly of them.
Mike is predeceased by his parents, Michael John Principe Sr. and Helen Brown Principe and brother Robert William Principe. He is survived by his former wife Madalena Principe, daughter Kelli Joy Principe, son in law, Erik Yurof and son Michael John Principe III, as well as five grandchildren: Nathan, Liam, Jocelyn, Michael, and Annabella, whom he loved dearly. Mike also had many dear extended family members and friends, but by far his love for lifelong friend and fellow coach, Michael “Rocky” Larocque was like no other. We also cannot forget to mention his beloved cat, who was his special companion.
Mike decided to dedicate himself to future studies at Brown University and admitted that he was “finally going to college.” A celebration of his life is being planned, with details to come. In the meantime, please take the time to inspire a friend, support one another, or go after your dreams just as Mike would have wanted. Donations can be made in his name to Grundy’s Gym, 147 Foundry Street, Central Falls, Rhode Island 02863, 401-286-3891.
